NCERT Biology Activities for Class 08 Science - Our Home Earth: A Unique Life Sustaining Planet - Class_08_Science
Aim/Objective: To identify and analyze the unique physical and biological features of Earth that sustain complex life.
Materials Required:
Procedure:
Earth's Escape Velocity is approx. 11.2 km/s. This is high enough to prevent essential gases like Oxygen and Nitrogen from escaping into space, but low enough that it doesn't require massive skeletal structures for land animals to move.
When discussing gravity and bodily functions, ensure you understand that these are theoretical scenarios; the human body is specifically "tuned" to 1G of force.
Compare Earth with the Moon. The Moon has no atmosphere because its gravity is too weak to hold onto gas molecules. This makes the "uniqueness" of Earth's mass much more apparent.
Aim/Objective: To compare the physical conditions of different planets to define the limits of the "Habitable Zone."
Materials Required:
Procedure:
The Habitable Zone is the orbital region where a planet can maintain liquid water on its surface. While Mars is at the outer edge, Earth sits perfectly in the middle, benefiting from a stable magnetic field and a balanced greenhouse effect.
Notice that Venus is significantly hotter () than Mercury ( average), even though Mercury is closer to the Sun. This illustrates the extreme power of the Runaway Greenhouse Effect.
Aim/Objective: To observe the growth of new plants from non-reproductive vegetative parts.
Materials Required:
Procedure:
Vegetative propagation relies on Meristematic Tissues—undifferentiated cells capable of rapid division. In potatoes, these are in the "eyes" (auxiliary buds); in money plants, they are at the "nodes" where leaves attach.
Wash your hands with soap after handling soil or raw tubers, as they may contain soil-borne microbes or residual fertilizers.
Use distilled or RO water for the money plant cutting to prevent mineral buildup on the emerging roots, which can slow down growth.
