Key Concepts
Green School Concept
A "Green School" is a school that takes active steps to protect the environment and manage resources wisely. Key features include:
- Waste Management: Reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.
- Water Conservation: Saving water and fixing leaks.
- Electricity Saving: Using fans and lights only when needed and using natural light.
- Green Campus: Planting trees and creating gardens to attract birds and butterflies.
Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya
This is a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission that focuses on keeping schools clean. It emphasizes:
- Clean toilets and hygiene education.
- Safe drinking water.
- Proper waste management.
Waste Management and Segregation
Waste should be separated at the source to make it easier to manage:
- Wet Waste (Green Bin): Food peels, leftovers, and other organic matter. This can be used to make compost.
- Dry Waste (Blue Bin): Paper, plastic, and other non-biodegradable items.
- Recyclers: Items like old newspapers, metal, and glass should be given to traditional recyclers for reuse.
Keeping the School Cool
Buildings can be kept cool without excessive electricity through:
- Shade: Planting trees near buildings.
- Ventilation: Designing classrooms with windows that allow a breeze.
- Reflective Surfaces: Painting roofs white reflects the Sun's heat, while black surfaces absorb it and make rooms hotter.
Water Conservation
Water is a precious resource that must be used carefully:
- Leaking Taps: Even a small drip can waste many glasses of water in a single day.
- Rainwater Harvesting: Collecting rainwater from roofs and using it for gardening.
- Jal Shakti Abhiyan: A government campaign to save and protect water through tree plantation and rainwater harvesting.
Biodiversity in School
Trees are essential for a green school because they:
- Provide shade and keep the surroundings cool.
- Clean the air.
- Provide food and home for birds and insects.
- Help in creating "Butterfly Gardens" by planting species that attract them.
Safety and Responsibility
A happy school is also a safe and caring school:
- Traffic Safety: Following traffic rules and signs near the school gate to prevent accidents.
- Fire Safety: Knowing where fire extinguishers are kept and practicing fire drills (moving quickly and calmly, crawling low under smoke).
- Social Behavior: Being kind, respectful, and polite. Waiting for one's turn and helping others makes everyone feel included and happy.
