From naming to grouping by feature and first functional reasoning.
The one shift: This is the most important transition in the whole 1–4 span. Children move from naming to grouping by feature and first functional reasoning (why does a plant need water — not just that it does). This is also the first year of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy completion, so written response starts appearing meaningfully.
| Term | Focus | Topics |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | Plants — structure & function | Parts of a plant, what each part does, how a seed grows |
| Term 2 | Animals — grouping | Grouping by movement (walk/fly/swim/crawl), animal homes, animal babies |
| Term 3 | Body & environment | Sense organs and function, balanced diet, water cycle basics, water conservation |
This is the first year for short written answers (1 sentence), but always paired with a hands-on or oral component in the same lesson. A fair Class 3 question: "Look at this picture of a plant. Which part takes in water? How do you know?" — tests reasoning, not recall.
CBSE's Looking Around Class 3 (~24 chapters) maps cleanly onto this term structure. For CISCE, this is the year to be most deliberate about sequencing — Class 3 is where an unstructured, no-fixed-syllabus approach does the most damage, since it's the pivot year for reasoning skills that everything in Classes 4–6 builds on.
