Plant Parts & Their Functions

NCF Learning Outcome: Labels root, stem, leaf, and flower, and states the function of each part.

1. Classroom Opener (The Hook)

Bring a real plant to class (a small weed with roots intact is perfect).
Ask the class: "If I cover this plant's leaves with black paper, what will happen to it? If I cut off its roots, what will happen?"
Introduce the concept: Just like our body has different parts to do different jobs (mouth to eat, legs to walk), a plant has different parts to help it survive.

2. Core Concepts: The Four Main Parts

A. The Roots (The Anchor & Straw)

Function 1: Anchors the plant tightly to the ground so it doesn't blow away.
Function 2: Acts like a sponge/straw to absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Teacher Prompt: "When we water a plant, we pour it on the soil, not on the leaves. Why?"

B. The Stem (The Elevator)

Function: Holds the plant upright towards the sunlight. Acts as a pipe or elevator, carrying water from the roots up to the leaves, and food from the leaves down to the rest of the plant.

C. The Leaf (The Kitchen)

Function: Leaves are the food factories of the plant. They use sunlight, air, and water to make food. This process is called photosynthesis (introduce the word only after the concept).
Observation: Have children touch a real leaf. Note the veins (the tiny pipes that carry the water).

D. The Flower & Fruit

Function: Flowers are the colorful parts that attract insects (like bees). Flowers turn into fruits, and fruits hold the seeds.
Function of Seed: To grow into a brand new plant.

3. Classroom Activity: The Celery Experiment

Prep: A stalk of celery (with leaves), a glass of water, and red/blue food coloring.

The Task:

Add 10 drops of food coloring to the water.
Cut the bottom of the celery stalk and place it in the colored water.
Leave it overnight.
Observation: The next day, the celery leaves will turn red/blue, and if you snap the stem, you will see colored tubes inside.
Ask: "What does this tell us about the job of the stem?" (Answer: It acts like a pipe pulling water up).

4. Assessment Check (Reasoning over Recall)

Instead of asking "Name the parts of a plant", ask an application question: "Look at this picture of a tall tree. If a strong wind blows, which part of the tree keeps it from falling over? How does it do this?"
