Adolescence: A Stage of Growth and Change - Activities

Activities and Experiments for Chapter 6

Activities

Activity 1: Let us Discuss Growing Up

Aim: To observe and identify the common changes occurring as students move from childhood toward adolescence.

Procedure:

  1. Students write down noticeable changes (in height, behaviour, etc.) in peers from Grades 5 to 8 on slips of paper.
  2. Slips are collected in a jar and discussed anonymously in class.
  3. Common observations are listed in a table (e.g., broader shoulders in boys, development of breasts in girls).

Conclusion: Adolescence is a universal yet highly individual stage of development where physical changes are the most visible signs of maturation.

Activity 2: Mapping Emotional Changes

Aim: To identify emotional shifts and find positive ways to manage them.

Procedure:

  1. Reflect on emotions felt over the last year (e.g., mood swings, increased sensitivity).
  2. List these emotions and their effects on behaviour.
  3. Suggest positive growth strategies:
    • Mood Swings: Engage in sports, music, or dance.
    • Strong Emotions: Involvement in social initiatives or helping the disadvantaged.
    • Heightened Curiosity: Explore new hobbies or creative projects.

Conclusion: Understanding and channeling emotions can help in making better life choices.

Activity 3: Nutritional Needs and Food Sources

Aim: To relate local food sources to the nutrients required for adolescent growth.

Procedure:

  1. Identify locally available foods.
  2. Fill in the nutrient functions:
    • Calcium (Milk/Curd): Helps in optimal bone growth.
    • Proteins (Pulses/Paneer): Helps proper growth and muscle strength.
    • Iron (Spinach/Raisins): Helps in the formation of blood (hemoglobin).

Observation: A balanced diet is the fuel needed for the rapid changes occurring during the teenage years.

Activity 4: Responsible Social Media Behaviour

Aim: To create awareness about safe and respectful online interactions.

Procedure:

  1. Work in groups to design posters on social media "Dos and Don'ts".
  2. Dos: Be respectful, think before posting, protect privacy, seek guidance from elders.
  3. Don'ts: Do not share personal photos with strangers, do not engage in cyberbullying, do not share passwords.
  4. Paste these posters around the school.

Conclusion: Responsible social media use is vital for the collective well-being of the adolescent community.
