NCERT Biology Activities for Activity 6.1: Comparing Breathing Rates - Class_07_Science
Aim/Objective: To observe and compare the variation in human breathing rates during different levels of physical activity.
Materials Required:
Procedure:
One breath is defined as one complete cycle of inhalation (breathing in) and exhalation (breathing out). In adults, the average resting breathing rate is 12–18 breaths per minute.
During the running phase, do not overexert yourself. If you feel dizzy or short of breath, stop immediately and sit down.
To count breaths more accurately, place your finger lightly just below your nostrils to feel the air being exhaled, or watch the rise and fall of the chest.

Aim/Objective: To demonstrate that carbon dioxide is present in the air we exhale.
Materials Required:
Procedure:
Lime water is a saturated solution of Calcium Hydroxide [Ca(OH)₂]. The "milky" appearance is due to the formation of insoluble Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃).
Only blow air OUT through the straw. Be careful not to suck the lime water into your mouth, as it is alkaline and can cause irritation.
Always use freshly prepared lime water. If left open to the atmosphere, it reacts with CO₂ in the air and becomes cloudy before the experiment starts.
