NCF Learning Outcome: Points to and names 3–4 common plants; observes leaf/flower shape.

1. Classroom Opener (The Nature Walk)

Do not teach this chapter from a book.

Take the children on a 10-minute walk around the school ground or garden.
Task: Tell every child to find and pick up one fallen leaf.
Back in class, have them compare: "Is your leaf big or small? Is it rough or smooth? What color is it?"

2. Core Concepts: Big and Small Plants

Introduce vocabulary by comparing sizes.

A. Trees (Big Plants)

Trees are very tall. They have a thick, hard stem (trunk).
Examples: Mango tree, Neem tree, Banyan tree.

B. Small Plants (Shrubs & Herbs)

These plants are short. Some have soft green stems, some have bushy branches.
Examples: Rose plant, Tulsi (Basil), Grass.

3. Classroom Activity: Leaf Rubbing Art

Prep: Crayons (with paper peeled off) and blank paper. The Task:

Place the leaf they found on the nature walk under the blank paper.
Rub the crayon flat over the paper.
Watch the shape and veins of the leaf magically appear.
Discuss: Remind them that leaves come in all different shapes and sizes.

4. Assessment Check (Oral)

Show a picture of a large tree and a small potted plant side-by-side.
Ask: "Which one is a tree? How do you know?" (Looking for the answer: "Because it is very big and tall.")
