Diseases & Transmission

Types

  • Communicable Disease: A disease that can be transmitted from one person to another.
  • Non-communicable Disease: A disease that cannot be transmitted from one person to another.
  • Endemic Disease: A disease that is constantly present in a particular population or geographical area.
  • Epidemic Disease: A widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time.
  • Pandemic Disease: An epidemic of an infectious disease that has spread across a large region, for instance multiple continents or worldwide.
  • Sporadic Disease: A disease that occurs infrequently and irregularly.

Modes of Transmission

  • Airborne: The disease is transmitted through the air.
  • Waterborne: The disease is transmitted through contaminated water.
  • Vectors: The disease is transmitted by an animal, such as a mosquito or a fly.
    • Housefly: Can transmit diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever.
    • Mosquito: Can transmit diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.
    • Cockroach: Can transmit diseases such as salmonellosis and gastroenteritis.
